Automation Engineer
Our electro mechanical device design build client is building a technology center in the Lowell, MA area that will employ a dynamic team of engineers.
The Automation Engineer is responsible for programming the operation of a Siemens PLC to control operation and interfaces for aviation security explosive detection systems. He/she will work from system and interface requirements to program the essential functions, including:
External interface between the in-line explosive detection system and the airport baggage handling conveyor system
Internal interfaces between the PLC and the power distribution, safety, motion control, high voltage and processor systems within the explosive detection system
Annual salary range 130,000-135,000
Automation Engineer Travel Requirements:
The role initially will be performed remotely from home half the week and on site in their upstate New York facility the other half of the week. Our client will cover all expenses for travelling and staying in New York until the Lowell area office is open.
Automation Engineer Responsibilities:
Maintain existing Step-7 “Classic” automation software and develop next-generation automation software using Siemens Step-7 “TIA Portal”.
Perform on-site integration of equipment with airport baggage handling systems via ProfiNet, ProfiBus, ContolNET, EtherNET/IP, ModBus/TCP and similar interfaces
Occasional travel will be required, both internationally and within the US to support integration at airport installations.
Develop and document PLC functions to meet interface and functional requirements
Develop external interface simulators for verification testing
Travel up to 10% to support integration at airport installations.
Automation Engineer Qualifications:
Experience developing applications with Siemens “Classic” and TIA Portal development tools
Good working knowledge of ControlNET, ProfiBus, ProfiNet and EtherNET/IP communications and other PLC interfaces
Knowledge of motor drives and VFD controllers
Prior direct experience programming PLC for Baggage Handling Systems with EDS equipment
Experience with other PLC development tools such as Allen-Bradley tools is a major plus
Prior experience programming PLC for parcel handling or other automated conveyor and sorting systems
Experience programming in C/C++ and/or C# using MS Visual Studio (2008 - 2013)
Education and Experience:
BS in Electrical, Mechanical or Computer Engineering; or equivalent experience
Minimum 2 years developing automation software
Proven ability to develop PLC SW code using one or more industry standard PLC platforms and development environments
Prior experience designing and implementing human user interfaces (HMI/GUI)
Knowledge of high- and low-voltage electrical systems and associated safety regulations
